I don’t understand. `CyanogenMod 13`_ introduced new Weather

Reading about the Synod of the Bishops of the Catholic church,
and instead of thinking about the important matters of the
remarriage, divorce, and ordination of women, what comes to my
mind is what came through my mind when listening to the past
dialog about the so called “gay marriages” (no, I don’t
believe there is such a thing).

It seems to me one of the roots of some Christians accepting the
idea of the marriage between two persons of the same sex is the
pain of looking at all those people who are living outside of the
boundaries of what is right. Listening to the arguments against
gay marriages claiming that it is unnatural and against the God’s
ordination what comes through my mind is thinking about all those
millions of marriages which were divorced. From the point of view
of the traditional understanding of marriage is a single-parent
family same nonsense as a marriage between two men or two women.
And yet, we Protestants (but I am afraid most Catholics are in
the same boat, they just don’t want to admit it) looking over the
complicated broken marriages just cannot throw them away and
calling them only sinners and ignoring all complexities of their
particular relationships. We all know stories of people who got
divorced, and these are stories perhaps of sin, but mainly of
pain, lost hope, and suffering for everybody involved (of course,
including children). A sin is supposed to bring pain, so perhaps
it is not so surprising?

And in order at least to alleviate the pain we try to create some
theory how to ignore this incredible number of people who failed
in one of the most important tasks in their life.

Also, we can see that for some the second marriage is a way more
holy and complete than the first one, created by too young people
without real understanding of what marriage consists of (no, I am
not talking about the reasons serious enough to allow the
annulment of the marriage, just young stupidity and
irresponsibility). I am thinking about my pastor, but also about
the famous cases of people like Johnny Cash and June Carter,
whose second marriage was (or is) a way more happy and truly sign
pointing towards the Paradise.

I don’t think there are many children in the age of my children
who would be dreaming about broken marriage, about leaving their
own children, about failing miserably. We all know somewhere deep
in our hearts what is the ideal for which we long for. And yet so
many of us fail in this endeavor. How to live in this pain of
disappointment?

I am thinking about the situation of the Unity of the Church as
well. How completely impossible it is to imagine than in our life
we would do at least so small and seemingly obvious step as being
able to share openly a Communion together. How is it possible
that followers of Jesus Christ cannot agree on something so
obvious as that they should follow the command of their Lord and
share the communion together? And yet we most likely (pending
some miracle) won’t see the Church repent and follow the Christ
in our lives. How to live with this pain?

I am thinking how to live in this pain of already knowing where
we should go and yet not being there.

We all try to avoid pain. We are willing to do anything when the
pain is too strong. We are able to lie, to hurt those whom we
love most, to pretend we are somebody else than we are, anything
possible legal or illegal, moral or immoral just to avoid the
pain.

So, obviously, one way how to avoid a pain is to tear down the
standards. I do not actually care about marriage, when mine fell
apart. Goal is actually not the united church, but current state
of thirty thousand plus denominations is sign of the God’s
creativity and plurality.

Or, we can go from the other side, and to deny the reality. `My
marriage is just fine, my wife has been for long time in Venice`_
Or, of course, there are no Russian soldiers in Crimea and
Novorussia. Or, the Church is actually not divided, but unified
in The Holy Spirit (except, I cannot go to the Catholic church to
participate in The Holy Communion).

But to live in this tension of unresolved dreams and hopes brings
pain! Yes, it does. “Thank God, there is deliverance through
Jesus Christ, our Lord!” (Rom 7:25)

Stále přemýšlím o přednášce „Změním úděl svého lidu“ na Katolické
charismatické konferenci 2016, kterou měli Kateřina Lachmanová
a Pavola Streža.

Možná on sám
a dům mého otce. Počínali jsme si vůči tobě hanebně,
nezachovávali jsme přikázání, řády a práva, které jsi vydal svému
služebníku Mojžíšovi.“ A Bůh ho dovede k tomu, co má dělat. A zde
to vykoná.

vina, a že potřebují usmíření s Bohem i s lidmi. A on se skutečně

a beznaděje. Kolik hořkosti asi mají lidé v srdcích a nejsou

On Personal Truth
#################

:date: 2016-10-02T18:57:39
:status: draft
:category: faith
:tags: postmodern

Our pastor was talking today about the distance between head and heart,
and that it is absolutely crucial to transform truths which we have only
in our head to those which are in our heart, and which are the only ones
which actually drive our behavior. He suggested the Lord’s Supper as one
God-given tool for surmounting. I completely agree with. The Lord’s
Supper is one mighty tool we were given for this purpose.

However, I don’t think it is the only tool. Yes, knowledge limited to
our head will not save us, unless it gets down to our hearts and thus
truly to our lives. However, it often feels from many evangelical
teachings that the solution for the lack of heart-knowledge is to
increase our head-study. I don’t think it makes much sense. I think we
need to get down to find out more what prevents the content of our head
to get down to our heart.

[…] and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

 -- John 8:32 NET

It may be a presumption, but I would add here to the Biblical text “and
ONLY the truth shall make you free”.

Postmodern philosophy is often accused (a bit unfairly I would think,
but that’s another topic) that its basic tenet is that everybody had
their own truth. It is certainly nonsense, if it means that there is no
single objective truth and what matters are only diverging opinions.
However, despite disagreeing with this, I don’t think we should throw
away this statement as such. In fact, I believe we all have own personal
Truths, set of things we truly deeply believe in, they are just so. This
set is product of our upbringing, education, experiences, etc. These are
truths for which we are truly willing to put down (to use the Czech
medieval phrase) our throat, honor, and estate, or at least we know we
should (if we were not such cowards).

The Lord is both kind and fair; that is why he teaches sinners the
right way to live. […] The Lord always proves faithful and reliable
to those who follow the demands of his covenant. […] The Lord shows
his faithful followers the way they should live. […] The Lord’s
loyal followers receive his guidance, and he reveals his covenantal
 demands to them.

 -- Psalm 25:8-14 NET

And yes, plenty of these truths we believe in are wrong. After all each
of us, who did not grow up in faith, had once as one of those heart
truths a belief that God does not exist. Of course, I do believe that
the best (if not only) measure of our faith and life is the Revelation
of God. Plenty of these truth we got wrong, we misunderstood what God
meant to tell us, we are influenced by our surroundings, wounds, our
pride and sin. So, we have to continue to educate ourselves, to
eliminate error from our thinking, look for new revelation, to be humble
over our understanding of the world. Yet, I still believe He reveals to
each of us all we need to follow him and do his will.

These are truths for which we are responsible, and these (personal,
heart) truths are the ones by which we will be judged. We are not
responsible for understanding everything, but for what has been already
revealed to us. We are responsible for bringing these truths to action,
we are responsible for preserving them, we are responsible for sharing
with our neighbors, and defending them against their opponents even upon
that throat, honor and estate.

However, there is also other side of this, and here we get to that
distance between our head and heart. I believe we are also responsible
for **not** confessing truths which have not been revealed to us. Did we
ever confessed anything just because it was the easy way out of the
situation, because we wanted to be accepted, because we were afraid? If
we did, I believe we were blunting our judgement to discern the truth,
we were actually lying. We live in the middle of the secular world, and
even in the Church we live amongst sinners. When was the last time we
stood up and said that what is commonly believed or what we are pushed
to confess is not true or we just don’t believe it? When was the last
time when hearing a sermon you said to yourself (you don’t have to
create a protest movement) “this is not the Father I know”, or “I don’t
think I believe this”? If we accept any junk which the world throws at
us, we cease to be able to recognize the truths we actually should hold
as our own.

Salmon fishing in the Yemen
###########################

:date: 2016-10-12T11:30:00
:status: draft
:category: faith
:tags: review, movie

Most movies are just faint shadows of what the original book was,
but in case of “Salmon fishing in the Yemen“ it is more true than
it is convenient. My story with this story started by reading
`the review by Roger Ebert`_ I left the reading of the movie with
a mixed feelings. On the one hand obviously Roger pointed out
flaws which were real. On the other hand, comments on the review
are firestorm of criticism explaining that Roger completely
missed the point of the movie, and he is also factually mistaken
in couple of points.

In the end I was so intrigued by the review and its comments,
that I have watched it myself. I liked both main actors (Emily
Blunt and Ewan McGregor), but I was sorely disappointed with the
script. So, I wrote this comment:

[…] I saw the movie, and I have to say it was a huge
disappointment. Yes, pictures were nice, but still it seemed
awkward … like the original idea of the movie is “how to get
Arabian sheik fishing in Scotland into the movie?”.

But more disappointed I was with the plot. My hope with the
British movies is that they are not always completely
stereotypically made by the Hollywood template (I love “The
Englishman Who Went up a Hill but Came down a Mountain”, for
 example), but this was 100% boilerplate … “Guy meets girl;
both of them kick off their current friend/spouse for no
particular reason, and they love each other for ever and
 ever”.

What if something was different than the boilerplate? Couple
of ideas. What if Robert actually did die (sealed coffin not
to show just the pieces returning from Afghanistan would look
lovely) and Harriet actually went through real mourning? Or
what if the movie ended á la “Once” … “I actually care more
about my marriage! Yes, I need partner in rebuilding the
project, and she is my wife!” (she was some kind of manager
as well, wasn't she?) or “F**k the sheik! I want to be
fisher expert on fish in Le lac de Genève and try to rebuilt
my marriage again”. There are many options how not make movie
boring, but they just went cheap way for the boilerplate.

Then I read the book. And I was surprised to find that its author
was actually closer to some of the points I have suggested than
the script writer. Yes, the Robert (and many others) in the book
actually did die, and no, Alfred and Mary did not get divorce,
and no, Albert and Harriet don’t fall into each other arms in the
end. Although, the result is a way more complex (and better) than
what I was suggesting.

Also, the business of movie making and cynicism of it:

The screenplay for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was written by
Simon Beaufoy, based on the novel by Paul Torday. Beaufoy
acknowledged, “I just love adapting material that allows room
for creativity and allows room for me to be very present in
the process, I suppose. Sometimes when you’re adapting
something classic and famous you have to adopt a different
attitude, to something like Salmon Fishing where it had such
an unusual narrative and such an unusual structure, that you
got quite a free reign [sic] to do interesting things with
 it.”

Couldn’t Beaufoy see that he sounds *exactly* like Peter Maxwell
when looking at the farmed salmons and not recognizing between
fake and the real thing? That what he actually said was “Who
cares that the author won awards for this book, I know better,
I won’t follow the story of the book, and write my own trash
instead!”

So much for the obvious problems with the movie. However, there
is more. The thing missed in the same manner by Roger Ebert,
director Lasse Hallstrom, and especially Mr. Beaufoy, is that the
book is not a comedy at all. Mr. Ebert for example was bitterly
disappointed that Kristin Scott Thomas’ person was the only
comical figure in the movie, and he seemed to me really
preferring the movie be kind of remake of “Four Weddings and
a Funeral”. Yes, it is a satire, but I don’t think it was meant
to be any more funny than “Graduate” (the book) for example (or
Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver's Travels”). Fuel for the book seems
to me more passionate dislike for the likes of Alastair Campbell,
rather than effort to make readers laugh. Also, Peter Maxwell in
the book is a way less funny than Ms. Thomas in the movie, he is
more disgusting than anything else.

Now from complaining to the really positive part of the book
(which was mostly missed by the movie). The book is actually
mostly about faith. Not exactly the religious kind, more faith is
put in salmons (and only indirectly sheik mentions Allah), but it
is one of more `authentic expressions of faith`_ I have met in
a long time. $$$ FIXME
