Couple of new blog posts:

* xkcd-for-my-daughter: a list of XKCD strips, which were the
  most relevant for me.
* enemies-to-friends: most “Enemies to friends” stories are just
  incredibly stupid.
* hinny_dump: just a disorganized dump of Hinny stories
* huna_drinny: one of plot bunnies, which I would like to read
  fulfilled, but I certainly cannot do so myself.
* james-potter-werewolf-incident: it is just impossible of events
  happened how they are described in canon, JKR had to make a
  mistake in ordering those two sub-stories, otherwise James
  Potter would be quite a monster.
* lords-supper-and-magic: I have never understood why the idea of
  magic should be against the Christian faith.

+is totally unacceptable that my daughter, breath of my life,
+wouldn’t know enough about the site which formed so much of my
+life. Of course, most of it is just a joke, but plenty of those
+comics had actual serious impact on my life.

+I have just re-read Tangerine-Alert trilogy on Harry avoiding his
+participation in the Triwizard Tournament (volumes one_, two_,
+and three_), and although I generally liked the stories and some
+of the ideas are really good, there was one overwhelming feeling
+which made me almost puke: the ease with which Harry collaborated
+with Lucius Malfoy. I understand that enemy to friends is a
+lovely trope and gives it a good dramatic tension, but if you
+want to really span the dramatic arch, then you have to span it
+and not ignore it. All these stories are from the GoF time-frame,
+so it is just not possible to get over the fact that Lucius
+Malfoy intentionally tried to hurt Harry's best friend's sister
+(if not more, we all know, that according to the fairy-tale rules
+the knight slaying the dragon and saving the princess has to
+get her hand in a marriage and half of her father's kingdom …
+OK, the latter wouldn't be too much, true), also intentionally
+(he knew the beast will go after muggleborns) tried to kill his
+other best friend, tortured Dobby, etc. Draco was not a sweet
+boy but aside from bullying Hermione he tried to kill Buckbeak
+just because he was not willing to admit his mistake. It is not
+possible for Harry to just skip over this with “Oh well, we
+have different opinions on how to lead magical society and it
+is probably my fault because I am not educated enough about the
+magical culture.” No, Malfoys (and Snape) are horrible human
+trash, and if they want to turn to the Light, they have plenty of
+turning to do.
+
+So, the story I would love to be able to read would be something
+like one of these stories, where Harry decides that Lucius Malfoy
+is the ally he needs (BTW, truly, Harry didn’t know about anybody
+else who could help him after going for three years to one class
+with Susan Bones?), and when the information leaks out, Ginny and
+Hermione go ballistic, because Harry betrayed them. Dobby just
+cannot take to his big heart that The Good Harry Potter allied
+himself with his Bad Former Master and commits suicide.

+Imagine a classical Huna story (Harry takes Luna to the
+Slughorn’s party and they hit it off), but seen from the eyes of
+Ginny. She has to finally fight the final loss of her hope that
+she would get together with Harry ever. She doesn’t get crazily
+jealous, because who could blame Luna for anything, and besides
+Luna is her friend and friends don’t steal boyfriends from other
+friends, but it is hard and she is moping around the castle
+in not very good mental state. While going through the second
+floor she finds Draco in the Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom breaking
+down because he just cannot carry on in his attempt to deliver

+One thing about those first two attacks (the cursed necklace and
+Katie Bell, and the poisoned mead and Ron) is that they can be
+fully orchestrated from outside Hogwarts. Actually, they feel
+weird exactly because they are too complicated for somebody who
+is inside the castle. That’s right, the true perpetrator of these
+two crimes was not Draco, but Narcissa Malfoy, who was still
+trying to save him by making him succeed, because she suspects
+Draco was not able to accomplish the intended assassination of
+Dumbledore.

+And when Draco sees somebody actually fighting for his life (more
+Ron than Katie who was unconveniently shipped to St. Mango),
+he might finally realized what does it actually mean to kill
+somebody.

+So, it could be possible to have both of my hoped-for pairings
+Draco/Ginny and Ron/Lavender (this time meant seriously after his
+near-death experience). Harry is free to go anywhere or even for
+Harmony or Huna for all I know.

+What is even more important question: were the words

+
+said by James Potter after Severus Snape was almost killed by the
+means of a werewolf in his presence (yes, James saved him, but
+was it really from the goodness of his heart or because he was
+smart enough to see what could happen to two of his friends)? And
+was James Potter still the best buddy with a guy who just for fun
+almost killed another (and threatened a life of his best friend)?
+
+If yes, if shows truly the level of arrogance and disrespect for
+human life which makes James Potter a way less nice person than
+he is usually presented to be. Actually, quite disgusting. (Of
+course, the problem is, I suspect, that JKR as usual didn’t check
+her timeline).

+Foremost, I don’t want to make it into a Catholic/Protestant
+thing. I know Catholics who agree with me in saying that the
+whole transubstantiation controversy is basically a disaster
+caused by the Scholastic attempt to squeeze everything into a
+rational framework.  Scholasticism was in many aspects an Alpha
+version of the Enlightenment of the Eighteenth Century, and it
+hit the similar problems.
+
+Here they tried to fit the round peg of the God’s mystery to the
+square hole of the Aristotelian logical framework of reason,
+and it really never worked well. Then of course, because the
+Catholic Church never makes a mistake, instead of admitting the
+idea was a bit foolish they doubled down on it and made it into
+`the shibboleth of the true faith`_, which made the whole thing
+even worse. Then the Reformation came and who were just two sides
+in a discussion were now enemies, and so Reformers add `their own
+junk`_.
+
+I do like the formulation of the seventeenth century bishop of
+Czech brethren Jan Ámos Komenský (Comenius) from his confession_
+of faith that Jesus told us to meet with him in the bread and
+wine and not to study it or trying to understand it.
+
+Concerning Harry Potter and transfiguration. I really don’t know
+where it came from that the Christian faith could be somehow put
+in jeopardy by the discovery that changing of water into wine
+(which is the best I can understand could transfiguration do) is
+possible by magic. Firstly, it is the Wedding at Cana not the
+Last Supper, and for the second, I don’t think even the most
+strict extreme Roman Catholic would ever argue that even the
+Consecrated Host would be by scientific method distinguishable
+from any other regular bread (not that he would do any scientific
+investigation of the Sacred Host for reverence to it).  Spiritual
+change of bread and wine into The Glorious Presence of the Lord
+Jesus is something which I don’t think even Professor McGonagall
+claim to do (who is in my headcanon a strict Presbyterian and a
+relative of Helen Burns from “Jane Eyre”).
+
+So, yes, after arguing about it for myself, I don’t think
+Transfiguration has any effect on anything, be it the Protestant
+Lord’s Supper or the Catholic Eucharist.
