Gnome 3 takes the direction of forcing people to do things in ONE way, the way people at Gnome thing everybody MUST follow. Gnome 3 is rooted in the idea that PCs are almost dead and what people need is a UI that fits "mobile" devices".

wp_id=14 @Stéphane: Some features are move to Gnome 3.2 because are not finish.

Theme changing: Now, they are few GTK3 themes (I know only the official). Porting this feature for 3.2 leaves 6 months to polish new theme or old GTK2 theme.

Privacy and Sharing in Control Center: This panel is to share files, medias, printers and desktop. In this moment, we are only at the stage of design. And in pause until the release of Gnome 3.0.

Screen-Saver: The screen-saver for Gnome 3 is simple; turn off the screen. Is the better screen saver and we need save power. And, to be honest, why show some forms and animations if we are not in our computer? In laptop, just turn off the screen and in desktop, just turn off the video out. The majority of screen turn standby if they are no video signal. No action from user needed.

Minimize Windows: The comunity continue to search a logic and intuitive implementation for Gnome 3.2.

Gnome 3 is not perfect, they are some defects:
- The option about what do when close the lid. The logic behind this remove are not bad and causes no problem in most cases exepte for one case: When you just change the room where you are. And this case cause some problems. We search to correct that or take another way for Gnome 3.2.
- The Dash: Why can I access to the "persistence notifications messaging tray" on the current workspace AND in "Activities" overview but can acces to the Dash only in "Activities"? It&#39s unlogical.
- The user-menu have two problems: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/... and https://bugzilla.gnome.org/...

Despite these imperfections, Gnome 3.0 is an excellent version and I prefer it to Gnome 2.XX.

wp_id=30 Interesting thoughts.
I came here via your post on Gnome 3.0, and noticed all the others your had.
This struck a chord, in me being of somewhat similar heritage (Czech & Polish on my father's side, though a hundred years out.), and wanting to read about the "faith" comments. I don't generally follow blogs, though I have friends who write them, some with seminary backgrounds.
I am not familiar with your four "stages" of Christianity. Is this just four groupings of people? It is somewhat confusing because I think of stages as being sequential; one coming after another (ex. GRUB has the Stage 1.5 & Stage 2). In training programs stages are also sequential, not progressing to a higher stage until a lower one is mastered. The stages as you used the terms don't seem to have any overwhelming merit as to being on one level or another. They appear to just be groupings? Is this what you wanted to convey?

wp_id=34 Four stages of Christianity is something coming from M. Scott Peck and his book The Road Less Traveled. Although he wasn't a Christian (as far as I know), there are many Christians who consider his thoughts interesting for understanding the current situation of the world. As a former social sciences PhD student I am first to admit that their conceptualization has a lot to be desired, but still it feels interesting and what I've found the best way how to understand role of Christians in this world.
Specifically to your question, yes, these stages of the spiritual/mental development in the similar sense as the grub starting Linux, but this is about humans and not about computers so it is all more complicated (and these are also parts were the poor conceptualization shows).
Disclaimer: Dave Schmelzer was my pastor when I was living in the States. And I like to listen to his sermons.

wp_id=35 Thanks! And I wholeheartedly agree. Even though synchronisation don't bite my needs every day, I wish it would really be a real open source alternative which *works* flawlessly, and is as easy to install, configure and use. And those questions are exactly the same questions I experience as well.

I've tried several times OpenSync and SyncEvolution, and it simply made a bigger mess than anything else. Unfortunately my time didn't stretch far enough to dig into these issues.

And yes, ActiveSync seems to be the only usable alternative now. But it seems requires a bigger infrastructure. So if Zarafa can fill that gap, is easy to install and maintain I really welcome it! But I just wish the Zarafa installation and configuration could be as "easy" as Zimbra can be, with integrated anti-virus and spam filtering out-of-the-box.

I am not a sys-admin by nature, and tickling SMTP servers to do a good job just isn't my favourite cup of fun. IMAP/POP servers on the other hand are easier to setup for me. But SMTP server config - for me, that's just yuck! Which is why I like the Zimbra installation process. It works out of the box, and provide me with the tools needed to tweak just those few things I really care about. But Zimbra's open source version lacks a decent synchronisation module - and it eats memory and CPU resources.

Having that said ... Thunderbird and Lightning is a good step forward. But Lightning is still cumbersome to really use efficiently. And synching more calendars makes Lightning freeze Thunderbird for a minute when the update time has arrived. It still lacks a real killer app which really can directly compete with Outlook. Now there's just a lot of attempts of such a killer app.

Evolution is a good attempt, but the instability makes it less ideal. And I've grown fond of the user experience in Thunderbird, which fits my taste very well. Evolution just lacks the "final touch" on the user experience. And Evolution might not be ideal if you want to replace Outlook on Windows. Not sure about OSX, though.

wp_id=37 I've been having an interesting email discussion with pohly which has helped me clarify my thoughts a bit: for me, the key difference between 'sync' and 'client/server' models, which I may not have expressed well, is that in the 'client/server' model the server is king. If you (the client) have cached changes when you get back online you prostrate yourself and humbly submit them to the server, and the server damn well decides what to do with them. It's not a peer-to-peer system with a little sync protocol running around trying to smooth over differences between the bickering peers; the server is God. If it decides the changes can't be reconciled with something that happened while the client was offline...too bad. And the client knows and accepts this; it knows its cached data is the variant case, and if the server decides it can't be accepted, the client knows to throw it away and go back to canon. The client doesn't believe that the changes made offline are the True Story of the data, it knows they're provisional upon future acceptance by the server.

wp_id=43 Yeah, makes sense. And I agree that it is probably better (although not nice ... error message "The appointment you've recorded two days ago was not nice enough for our server. Tough luck if you don't remember what it was."), but just that git makes me to believe that true synchronization is possible, although I know it is hellishly difficult.

2011-04-15T09:23:21Z false false matej true
wp_id=44 Maybe the missing part of the synchronization is same as between CVS/SVN and git/hg: don't reconcile two new states, but just apply changesets. Although, this would require support on clients side … most clients probably don't record changes, but only new state.

wp_id=48 Hi,

I'd recommend taking a look at Memotoo - it's a web-based service using mainly SyncML to sync with, well, lots of things. It's worked pretty well for me so far - I had the one instance where client and server got irrepairably out of sync, and that was using SyncEvolution. It doesn't really fix the problems with existing Linux synchronisation solutions, but it does take a lot of the pain out of using them.

wp_id=51 I know about both of these (and others, Chandler), but problem I have with most of these is that they are completely non-integrated and hard to make to work with others (not mentioning packaged and well packaged for Fedora/RHEL). When I am at it, I would love to have synchronized also at least contacts as well, and emails would be welcome. I know that some future version of DaviCAL should support CardDAV as well. And when we are in emails, then you need antispam, and all it gets quite complicated. In the end I have settled for Zarafa although i have some serious doubts about some of the design decisions behind it (e.g., storing emails in mySQL, not in mbox/Maildir/MH).

DAViCal allready supports CardDAV. I have seen it in action.

I provide daily DAViCal builds at http://yum.felixmoeller.de/. If you are interested in them I am more than happy to talk to you via mail.

Personally I currently operate a CalendarServer trunk snapshot. Which does all the nice stuff of sending invitations out and so on. You do not have to host any mail service yourself. Mine uses IMAP and SMTP from fastmail (needs +-addressing...).

I have a package for that too. But thats still quiet hacky therefore no public builds yet.

wp_id=62 I know about these programs, but there is still that question, how to integrate this whole together. In the end I would LIKE to have an integrated product (let's call it my-own-GMail-GCalendar-GContacts) with both web interface and computer-friendly interfaces (IMAP, CardDAV, CalDAV, phone synchronization). The reason why I reluctantly use Zarafa is that it provides me almost this whole package together (with some pieces missing). I don't know about anything which would have similarly integrated (w/integration built-in or as a separate program) result like Zarafa (and Zimbra) has.

IIRC part of the point of some of those projects is to develop protocols for this sort of thing (I think Diaspora is doing protocol documentation for everything new they come up with so once they get something significant going and stabilized someone could do a competing implementation)

Apparently there are even ways someone with enough soldiering knowledge and the right equipment can fix it but it's an unfortunate flaw in elsewhere reasonable and solid hardware (yes, it's large and somewhat RAM-challenged, but given its age and the hardware keyboard that's to expect, I guess).
I've seen enough of Android in the tablet Mozilla has given me (and I did even register it with Google and look for things in the official Android market) that I really think I'll buy an N9 just because it's the best thing I can get right now that promises to not embarrass me. wp_id=229 I did a similar switch some 9 months ago, and you are completely correct, FOSS community on android is somewhere between non-existant and still having diapers. If you insist on using non-commercial apps, your experience is going to be terrible. However, if you are prepared to give some small cash amount, you can be truly pleasantly surprised. Most of the free apps are unfortunately either in very early development or so bad that no one would pay a cent for them anyway. You can try BeyondPod for podcasts and it will give you most of the stuff you're asking for.
Also, you will need to get used to a lot of assumptions that are made in such a "consumer friendly" platform, less than in Apple, but more than in Nokia. E.g. phone conversation audio is mono, therefore it will go through BT mono connection, music (and podcasts) are stereo and will go through stereo connection. This assumption helps avoiding complex configuration options or playback output selection choices that will confuse 99% of the users and are only useful for 0.01% of the target audience. It also allows hw makers to sell more equipment (you will need a separate headset for calls and for music, or the rare one that supports both) which is not bad either ;-)

wp_id=230 Thanks for the post. I own a N900 and I am equally unsatisfied with the small RAM. It has swap, but that is already used the second I boot it up, so the core applications are memory hogs, starting any other app is painfully slow. And I can´t use Firefox because of that. Anyway, I have been thinking of getting a Nexus S myself, probably after Ice Cream Sandwich works on it.
The calendar is actually one of the apps in Maemo I like. I´m not a power user, but AFAIK there is no other phone with a week-overview, is there?

So how about more typical phone-like comparison?
How is the GPS connection? With N900, GPS without an internet connection (roaming) is just plain useless, and the built in maps software is extremely slow.
Battery life?
What about actual calls? The N900 just cant decide if it wants to display the call UI is landscape or portrait, switching between each other, it frequently takes 5s till I can accept the call at all.
General UI performance? On my N900, especially rotation is extremely sluggish, as is most of the other UI, very unpleasant.

wp_id=240 It is just another case of reducing complexity. While a situation where you use 2 BT headsets connected at the same time might be rare, it is fairly common to have a phone in some kind of dock with speaker attached, and an active BT headset.
Unless you want to force users to make active choice for such situation, you need to make one for them. Nokia always left the option for a user to decide, but that's also one of the reasons why their phones were considered "hackish" at times. I didn't mind that part, in fact I enjoyed it, but apparently 99% of the market hated it.

wp_id=335 The main problem with Chrome is that it is a very good browser. It offers more than enough for non tech-savvy users and easy to understand framework for simple extensions.
Chromium is open source. And geeks like it's efficiency and architectural beauty. When it comes to browser, Google has standards and follows them. Security and efficiency.
Firefox is commited for user rights and open web. But what about vision for geeks and programmers? Mozilla doesn't blog this.
XUL: does it have future or html5 is the only future?
ancient XPCOMatose Gecko vs (efficient and modern) Webkit
Your old add-on technology was deprecated and Jetpack is like copying Webkit and Chromium teams' decisions.
Idea of html 5 is : any web site app can 100% work correctly within any browser platform.
If Mozilla adds more than specification says, it'll become non-compliant in a strict sense. So, Gecko must do it's job as good as webkit. Developers just don't believe you can do it ( design new language just to write a rendering engine? for real?). So, why should I choose your platform if Webkit is already here and Chromium extensions just work in all versions.

wp_id=337 As a Googler on the Chrome team I feel compelled to correct your point about Gmail offline.

Gmail offline was built atop WebSQLDatabase. This meant it was limited to browsers supporting WebSQLDatabase, which pointedly did not include Firefox and IE. There were two reasons WebSQLDatabase was used instead of IndexedDB:

(1) WebSQLDatabase matched up well with the existing, Gears-based implementation of offline Gmail, making porting more feasible. (This should be kind of obvious since Gears was the source of the WebSQLDatabase proposal to begin with.)
(2) IndexedDB was simply not mature enough at the time, in spec or implementation, to build a complex product like Gmail atop.

Unfortunately, when combining this with various other Gears-like needs that only Chrome implemented at the time, you got a product that only worked in Chrome.

No one on the Chrome or Gmail teams liked this state of the world, and thankfully, it's not going to continue into the indefinite future. Work on an IndexedDB-based version of offline Gmail is in progress. I don't know when it will be released, but it should allow other browsers to access offline Gmail. (Hooray!)

As for the rest of bullet 1, I can't say it seems very accurate either. We definitely still have groups and individuals that promote and talk about the open web, HTML5, etc. As for the "Chrome-first" bit, the specific cases I've seen have all been ones where the "Chrome-first"-ness is because Chrome has been first to implement some particular proposal that that app wants. This shouldn't be too hard to understand: browser vendors have finite resources and choose to focus them on different places, so generally different browsers take the lead on different standards implementations. Chrome's priorities are often informed by other app teams at Google, so it happens a lot of the time that what Chrome does first and what some app wants are related. However, to my knowledge, a lot of effort goes into ensuring that standards are being proposed, that we support other browsers when feasible to do so, etc.

I don't have the knowledge to speak to your other bullets, but I can definitively say from the Chrome/web/apps side of things that Google has not lost sight of its principles.

In fact, when browsing with Firefox, Google's suggestion to upgrade to a "modern browser" of course is cynical. But there is some truth in it, unfortunately.

Concerning your other points, you are just missing the information ... by following Jetpack/Add-on SDK channels I got plenty of information about XUL and Add-on SDK. And I am clearly persuaded that MoFo (and Microsoft) rejected WebSQLDB mostly on technical merits ... that as I said is unfortunate, but understandable.

wp_id=350 We've certainly noticed numerous cases at Mozilla where "Chrome first" apps come out that either already DO work in Firefox, or are based on competing specs but only the Chrome spec is used in the demo, or where proprietary or deprecated technologies are used that Chrome shouldn't even be shipping. Its difficult for people here to call them out without sounding whiny and desperate, while at the same time advocating for the standards process. Despite a lot of talk from the Chrome team that they should or will deprecate those things, it never seems to happen. At some point I just stopped listening to any talk coming out of there, at least about these types of things. Talk is cheap.

I think that's the difference though. Mozilla's mission is one about user choice and freedom and looking at the long term health of the web. So we do have to complain and sound whiny when we see huge important web companies not taking standards based development seriously and setting an example to webdevs everywhere that writing a WebSQL only website is a fine thing to do.

Google's mission on the other hand is either "Get all the information" or "Don't be evil" depending on the day. Its not "Be good!", and that gives them the freedom to do a lot more and do it quickly because its not 'evil' in the eyes of the average user. I think Mozilla's stuck in a hard place explaining that to people. Google can say things along the lines of "We love HTML so much we're going to extend it even more!" and those users are instantly confused all over again. Releasing source code, or even writing a standard and throwing it at the W3C is not enough. Standards based development is about working with other companies, which inherently means compromise and slows things down. I fear that this drive to move as fast as humanly possible will eventually kill standards entirely.

> XUL: does it have future or html5 is the only future?
Mozilla removed support for XUL in websites over a year ago. Most of what people loved about XUL is being ported to HTML5 in one way or another. Same tech. Different names.

> Your old add-on technology was deprecated and Jetpack is like copying Webkit and
> Chromium teams' decisions.
This is not true. Jetpack provides an API to make extension development easier, but the old tech hasn't been deprecated.

wp_id=351 NaCl is a case where other browsers are welcome to implement the feature if they wish and it's designed to not be exclusive to Chrome. As you note, so far other vendors have elected not to implement it. That's fine. It doesn't mean that somehow the Chrome team is wrong for continuing to work on it in the belief that it's a valuable technology. Eventually, if that's true, other browsers will probably adopt it; if not, it will die. I don't see anything wrong with this world.

I'm not involved in anything Dart-related so I can't speak to that. I have no idea how compelling it is, how likely to ever be shipped in volume, etc. The "infamous" memo you cite seems to be about Dart, so I'll lump that in with Dart.

Again, if Google makes specs for Dart open, welcomes external input, and executes it in a way that allows other vendors to implement or reimplement freely, I'm not sure what's wrong with that world. Are there signs that is not happening?

As for the Chrome app store, I have asked the folks in charge of that numerous times about other browsers and how we can make sure to avoid lock-in. My impression is that while it's a difficult question, since part of the value proposition for authors is supposed to be "having a known set of target capabilities for the browser", there have been significant and ongoing talks with some Mozilla folks to try and reach a shared viewpoint on what an app is, how one is defined, the capabilities, putting them in stores, etc. I sat at at least one lunch meeting involving Mozilla folks discussing this so I know there's some truth to this. I don't know how far it goes, but the desire to collaborate seems to be present.

As for Angry Birds, I really have no idea how the contract is structured, but it strikes me that phrasing like "deliberately only work in Chrome" implies purposeful intent on Google's side to ensure the resulting experience is degraded and denied to all other browsers. In a different case that I _do_ have more specifics for, I know that what happened was that the vendor contracted to do the work came back with something that only worked in Chrome, and the team then spent the day or two before launch trying to see if they could retrofit other browser support into the product, but ultimately didn't make it. While I have no idea whether anything similar happened in this case, it seems irresponsible to me to assume and imply nefarious intent on Google's part when you don't have supporting data. Unless you have some you'd like to share.

I guess overall I feel disappointed that you're clearly frustrated, roc, because you're a smart guy, I've worked with you in the long past, and my desire is for our teams to get along well and for members of both teams to have confidence that the other team really is trying to do right by the world -- which both companies' teams are. I guarantee you that if I see things that sound like "Chrome-only", I speak up and fight them. But I really don't see all that many. I just don't subscribe to the view of the world it seems like you're convinced of.

wp_id=374 I think you're too pessimistic about BrowserId. The major players won't use BrowserId (at least for a while) because it's not in their interest, but it *is* in the interest of just about everyone else.

BrowserId solves several headaches for developers (no complicated login systems or password storage, password reset/retrieval, etc. required) and makes life much easier for users too. That's criticial: it needs to be easier for developers AND users. And it is. There are no serious contenders that satisfy both these requirements. (OpenID has awful end-user usability.) It's win/win for all but the majors, and so should (to use evolutionary game theory terminology) invade and become the dominant strategy.

The only reason I can see this might not happen is if Mozilla fails to market it properly. This would include: not releasing a 1.0; making revisions to the API that keep breaking things; talking up the security, without pointing out how easy is it is for both website developers and users to actually use (to most people, security is boring and actually quite negative once you get past the bullet point "* It's secure!"); creating a slow login page (e.g. currently, it's far too slow!); etc.

Note: I'm not saying Mozilla has made these marketing mistakes yet --- because I assume they haven't started marketing it yet. In fact, I think the approach so far has been pretty good (i.e. deploying to Mozilla sites; simple sample code; allowing logins from a webserver rather than restricting it's usage to browsers that have implemented it; etc.) So like I said, I think you're being too pessimistic about BrowserId. I think it's future is bright.

I was using thunderbird even before it was 1.0, and I wouldn't been losing my time commenting here if I wouldn't care.

The truth is that when I left thunderbird for Sparrow, basically none of these features where working. Even if Mo Messaging hass been founded, the project looked like it was dying, the lightning project announced for years was making very slow progress and so on…

I completely agree with you, the web-app fashion is over-hyped and there is definitely a place for standalone email clients (to take that only example). The fact that Sparrow succeeded and not Thunderbird is a proof that people don't all fell for the hype, but really that there exists a big problem with Thunderbird as it is right now.

wp_id=386 The thing is: You're an obsolete kind of user. We have lived through the age of the personal computer, but that's coming to an end now. Personal computers were universal and independent.

Universal in the sense that they weren't geared towards one particular purpose such as communication or entertainment, and that even plain users would often implicitly use some variety of scripting or programming to make the machine a part of their natural workflow.
Independent in the sense that they could accomplish this without the processing power or storage capacity of other machines, and of course in the sense that both hardware and software would more often than not come from a variety of vendors.
Today's devices are the opposite of all that. That's why you're confused.

The new generation of users are raised not to have that impulse. You don't start with an idea, but with a software that enables you to have that idea. The means create the needs. It's not: "How do I organise my friends in convenient subgroups using Facebook?" It's: "Oh look, Google+ has circles!" It's not: "How can I make my pictures look more appealing when I publish them online?" It's: "Oh look, Instagram has filters!"

The new generation of users doesn't think of webmail as a crummy interface to a powerful system. The ideas they have about e-mail are the ones their webmail enables them to have. If their webmail can't do two accounts, then you better not have two accounts, since e-mail obviously isn't meant to do that. It's this conceptual shift that will eventually kill the personal computer and the free internet.

I was able to connect to my never-before-used Google calendar and use that, but it requires an Internet connection to add an event (I don't want a data plan so I just use Wifi). Though it's not ideal, it's better than nothing.

Also for contacts, I had the insight to add all my contacts to Google way back in case I ever lost my phone. The problem is that after importing all the contacts from my last SIM card and importing my contacts from Google, I now have duplicates of nearly every contact. It's a real pain to try deleting them, but at least the view in the contact list is the only problem (everywhere else it understands there are multiple contact names for the same number).

Last, the browser. The only two really big problems I have with it is the speed (mostly for watching Youtube videos) and the UI's features (such as settings, accessing the URL bar quickly, etc). I know the latter will eventually arrive, but I hope speed is something that's just a matter of updating the software...

It's not that I couldn't find a solution (as in your blogpost), but it's simply still not ready for wide usage in the modern age. I can't persuade my non-technical friends to use something like that, with all the missing pieces and half-functioning clients. However, exactly the rule “allow contacts only from contacts on roster” is easy to achieve and it is already in examples in https://xmpp.org/extensions... :

<iq from="romeo@example.net/orchard" type="set" id="all3">
<query xmlns="jabber:iq:privacy">
<list name="all-sub-example">

</list>
</query>
</iq>

And of course, once this is in the server, it works equally well without regards to the client used.

Very briefly, but it seemed to me like any other IDE. And sorry, I don't do KDE much. I somehow prefer my desktop to be as homogeneous as possible, and when I threw my fate with Gnome (I am Desktop QE for Red Hat after all), I try to be as Gnome-centric as possible. That's nothing against KDE particularly, I used to use for many years (until 3.9, when I joined Red Hat) and I was happy with it. But then I had hard time to use anything Gnome-based (yes, I seriously used konqueror as my day-to-day browser then).

These are good comments. I certainly would not presume to judge anyone in a really difficult situation such as your Radio Free Europe example.

I think with Google as your client it should be easy to simply refuse to answer any questions about non-public Google-related information. Same goes for Google employees. The kind of question in my example, where refusing to answer gives away the answer, is relatively rare.

I think that Jesus, per the Sermon on the Mount, generally expects us to take an expansive view of the commandments, and treating "don't bear false witness" as an admonition against lying in general is reasonable. But I agree that the situation is more nuanced than what I wrote. I've updated my post to link here.

Yes, I know about dosemu (II have now added old screenshot of the combination), but really, running this ancient archaeological excavation (do I have correct dates on max.exe as 1996-02-26 ? It is probably a way older, right?) doesn’t make much sense. Dosemu is such a pain to live, I think the only sensible thing is just converting the data to something created in this millennium. If you make a conversion script to VimOutliner (of which I am co-maintainer), I would welcome a pull request on https://github.com/vimoutli... :). And yes, I still believe that proper implementation of these functions in VO (https://github.com/vimoutli... ) would be a good idea.

Maybe this issue is like the question of religion -- something that which non-participants cannot understand. The individualized society favors one personality type and the outsider -- the person who is not comfortable with the networked society -- has his/her voice muffled. Intellectuals are capable of getting into position because of their ability to handle said system and the reproduction of the system is immanent. The mechanism you search is emotion.

I think that dropping Ginny almost completely from books 3 and 4 was likely the biggest mistake in her story arc. By the time she's back, so much has happened without her, including the resurrection of Voldemort.

And then the second biggest mistake was that she's still never added to the trio. Harry has Ron and Hermione who know everything that's going on with the Horcruxes and the fight against Voldemort, and Ginny isn't told all those things - even after Harry breaks up with her to go hunting. Without being included in that knowledge, she can never break into the foreground and become a protagonist. Harry's love interest ought to be someone he trusts and confides in more than anyone else, but Ginny has never been given any special trust beyond what eg Luna has, and vastly less than Hermione.

So, I really like the idea of Harry/Ginny, there's lots of hints of how she would be great for him, but canon dropped that ball, twice.

You're also quite correct that we don't see how she changed from Chamber of Secrets to Order of the Phoenix. We're told that she was actually fiery and outspoken all along, Harry just didn't see it. But if she's to play a major role, we really should be shown.

Absolutely agree. I have a lot of problems with most Harmony stories (see other posts on this blog), but one thing I have to give them is that JKR completely missed that dating is also about something else than snogging. She completely missed on friendship, cooperation, doing something together. I can somehow understand perhaps a little bit reasons why Harry would like to at least pretend publicly that he broke up with Ginny (although, The Trace is the worst plotcrutch in the history of plotcrutches), but I cannot understand that at least whole summer she didn't cooperate with them on planning (perhaps, the daughter of Molly Weasley would tell them that food is important ;)). And what would happen, if The Trio was killed while camping? Knowledge of horcruxes dies, Voldemort wins and lives forever, the end of story. Wow!

The Pureblood Pretense series has some interesting discussions about Light and Dark magic, with "Light" style being more precise and delicate (necessary for some types of advanced healing) while "Dark" style is more direct and forceful (necessary for some of the nastier curses). Mages are born with natural affinities, which are not necessarily tied to morality, and most spells can be cast in either style (eg transfiguring a matchstick smoothly into a needle vs having it change suddenly), but the fact that only Dark casters are capable of eg the Killing Curse means that there is some social stigma. And perhaps as a result, and because affinities can run in families, there has been a tribal tendency for people to group together along affinity lines, and thus it's become tangled up with politics, where anti-muggle and pro-segregation views are associated with Dark purebloods, while pro-integration viewpoints are considered Light.

Taking a highly magical premise where people can warp reality by waving sticks and shouting nonsense, then building a society made of up ordinary people living more or less ordinary (yet magical) lives, was IMO the part that JKR really accomplished well. Harry is a schoolboy struggling with homework and peers and difficult teachers and fumbling steps toward romance. The Weasleys are a low socio-economic family with lots of children whom they can only just afford, but their home is full of love and laughter (despite the bickering). Those are normal, relatable things. The fact that the school curriculum is magic and the Weasleys are pure-blooded mages is integral to the plot and yet secondary to how it's written.

2021-03-31T22:27:43Z false false Carl Antuar false carlantuar
Well, in real life, friendships and especially romantic relationships are built on hundreds of little things, which if all written down would fill volumes. I guess I just enjoy reading through more of those small, but numerous and important, relationship-building moments between Harry and Abby, where they gradually get to know each other, find the things that they like about each other, support each other when things aren't so great, and come to the conclusion that they want to keep doing this. Plus, Abby's interactions with Harry's children are just adorable.

The House of the Seven Gables, from what I can tell on its Wikipedia page, is not a romance, so it isn't going to have the same reasons for going into fine detail.

2021-03-31T22:52:21Z false false Carl Antuar false carlantuar
Well, I don't think that exploding Molly Weasley's face was fun for anyone involved. It was certainly dramatic, though, and it was part of some very important conversations that the characters really needed to have about Harry and Ginny's relationship, what the bond means for them and for her family, about balancing Molly's caring for Ginny (who's only ten) with her trusting Ginny (who is trying to do the right thing in a very unusual situation). All important things to communicate and come to some kind of resolution about. So I agree that the story has quite good relationship development.

I started Notebooks and Letters, but wasn't all that impressed by it. I guess it felt like "canon, except giving Ginny's moments to Hermione", kind of like how the movies gave Ron's best lines to Hermione. I liked Hermione Granger and the Goblet of Fire better; it has a really organic relationship development, with a compelling reason, namely, Harry believed that Hermione hadn't put her name in the Goblet of Fire, when hardly anyone else did, and so they drew closer over the course of the year.

Similarly, the very idea of the feudal (or even
earlier) highly unequal society in the twentieth century HP
universe is in my opinion doomed to fail.

Interesting. The Pureblood Pretense series steps in this direction, but I would say that it also steps back from the modern aspect of Harry Potter - especially in Britain. The American Institute of Magic has a more modern feel, starting from Archie's flight on an aeroplane and continuing in that vein, but Hogwarts and British society are firmly in an older age. And it works, because Harry's parents are alive, so she's much less exposed to the nonmagical world than canon Harry was. There's no electricity in their home, she didn't go to a muggle primary school, her whole life is in the magical world, so it can be more Victorian than canon without losing cohesion.

And it makes some sense, too, when magical society is overall in much better condition than canon, with no civil war. With more magical neighbours around, less reason for anyone to hide, and prejudiced segregationist laws promoted by Riddle's "Save Our World" party, it's logical that the Wizarding world is more culturally disconnected.

2021-04-01T04:32:46Z false false Carl Antuar false carlantuar
To me, the complexity of the plot is a feature, not a bug. Yes, there are many side-stories and sub-stories. That's how life works, and I rather like seeing the story presented as, "Here is Harry's life during his school years."

You're right that online publishing allows vastly longer stories that a commercial publisher would not allow (they would be, at the very least, put under the knife and sliced to a fraction of their length). I'm not so sure, though, that that length is inherently bad. Insofar as it results from a lack of review and editing, perhaps it is bad, but insofar as it merely reflects the fact that we don't need to cut down trees to print it, I appreciate the opportunity to see more of what the author wanted to write. And The Accidental Animagus felt, to me, less stretched out and less of a drag than eg the Silmarillion.

Certainly some readers prefer things they can quickly finish, and certainly there are stories that pack a 50,000-word story into 500,000 words, but I think there is still an audience for stories that simply have a lot to say.

The Pureblood Pretense is type 1, but I wouldn't say that the author's motivation is the fact that she herself is female (although she is). Rather, she drew on elements from Alanna the Lioness, so a female Harry was the logical way to write it. An Alanna-type story with a male Harry pretending to be female would still have been a gender-bender, and would have probably been harder to pull off (eg the gender-segregation spells on the dormitories are canonically one-sided, so a male Harry would be unable to access the female dorms and the ruse would have been found out on day 1).

Also, there's mention in some of the author notes that she felt there weren't enough good fem!Harry stories, and wanted to give it a try.

I'm curious about how you would classify The Peace Not Promised. When it comes to Lily, Severus freely and humbly and apologetically acknowledges the evil of his past deeds, his shame and self-loathing, and seeks to do what is best for her whatever the cost to himself. When it comes to the Marauders, he clings more to his resentment, only gradually letting go of it as his grudges run out of oxygen in the altered timeline. He does eventually find a measure of reconciliation with them, but I don't recall him ever actually apologising for his own actions, though James does apologise to him. Still, he is able to reach a point where he can truly bury the hatchet, let past feuds go, and be passably friendly toward them. Would you call it a redemption, then?

That is a real shame. It could be very interesting to read about a family that is drawn together by practical necessity, and can at least show decency to each other, without really liking each other (at least at first). If it didn't really work out into a proper story, though, that's a pity.

Similar to Radio Free Europe would be the case of someone hiding Jews in their attic during Nazi Germany; surely, if police knocked on the door and asked whether they know where any Jews are hiding, the only way to save innocent lives from wicked men would be to lie. Refusing to answer would reveal the truth.

The Bible speaks approvingly of Rahab, who did something very similar for the Israelite spies in Jericho.

At the same time, I would hesitate to condemn someone who refused to lie even in such a cause. Honesty at all costs is worthy of respect, and there are worse fates than martyrdom.

I've generally heard the word as part of a compound, "secular humanism", associated with the idea of humanity creating its own paradise through advancing technology and social reform - usually social reform in the form of persuading people to learn more about things like properly weighing statistics and probability, and embracing utilitarian ethics.

Not entirely bad, but built on sand. Advancing technology without changing human hearts will just hand more power to the selfish. Advancing understanding of how to rationally work toward your goals, without first embedding the love of neighbor as oneself, likewise.

Interesting, I missed that about book!fight v film!fight. I thought that films were mostly faithful with regards to books.

It certainly is long, and I've noticed that you generally prefer stories to be concise, so yeah, perhaps not.

It is much more interesting than the summary makes it sound, though. My initial impression from reading the summary was that it would be a canon rehash, but with Harriett in the girls' dorm, maybe befriending Lavender and Parvati instead of Ron. It's actually nothing like that. The world is very AU, and despite following some canon events, it generally feels like a whole new storyline. Harry is a very different person, too, which I attribute to her different upbringing; she's very goal-driven, very organised, but socially inept, partially as a result of her obsessive focus on brewing, and partly because she keeps secrets from everyone. I think that radically changing her like that was probably good for making the storyline fresh; it gives her a very different schooling experience from canon.

The first film did quite a respectable job of following the book IMO.

The second film was way off. Most of it focused on the Battle of the Hornburg, which in the book was a minor early skirmish that was always skewed heavily in favour of the defenders.

The third film wasn't terrible IIRC, but it took a big scalpel to the book and sliced out lots and lots of the story in order to finish in time.

Actually, hiding her gender ends up being minor compared to everything else involved in pretending to be her cousin. Unlike the original Alanna books, she and Archie are regularly corresponding with their parents and swapping back and forth over the summer, so it gets complicated. And the stakes are rather higher; Alanna revealed herself to open-minded friends and was okay, but for Harry it would mean Azkaban.

Harmony stories set in seventh year or later do have some more shared experiences for Harry and Hermione to draw on, but yeah, i've been disappointed in several cases by how readily they brush Ginny aside. Home Is Where The Heart Lies did quite a good job overall, for example, but I would have liked it better if it had taken a little more care with Harry and Ginny's break-up. Lines like "She expected him to move on too, for everything to go back to the way it was, and he doesn't understand how she can expect him to be the same as before, after everything he's suffered and everything he's lost—" don't really do justice to Ginny, I think, considering what she went through at Hogwarts that year. I would actually expect her to be better able to really connect and sympathise with Harry's trauma, while Hermione would be more inclined to pragmatically move on and put the war behind them.

Especially for somebody live herself through a traumatic experience … for example when she was eleven being possessed by completely ruthless and immoral criminal? Perhaps she could be a bit sensitive to such experience. (Still I am bitter to JKR for not working more on one of the best lines in whole series: ‘“Lucky you,” said Ginny coolly.’… there is just an awesome story somewhere behind that sentence, which was completely ignored)

The others are kind of minor issues, which I have many (or not so minor … can you imagine what would really happen after https://youtu.be/DqdDmrUuvx... this is literally it, the end of the story; what do you think would follow after this? what did follow in the film? nothing). But the missing “Scouring of the Shire” is major part of the plot missing, which undermines whole logic of the story.

It's not a bad definition, but I think that the term "racism" can still apply even in situations where someone's actions are not based on stereotypes. If someone genuinely believes that people with black skin are not fully human, that's not really a stereotype, but it's most definitely racism. If someone uses racial rhetoric, without actually believing it, just to stir people up to anger so that they're easier to manipulate, that's racism even if it's not about stereotypes. So I'm not sure that stereotypes define racism, they're just strongly correlated.

I would probably define it more in terms of simply treating people differently because of the race they were born into.

I can easily believe that CC is better on stage than in print, and there are some productions where that's okay, eg "Cats" is all about the choreography and the costumes rather than the plot. However, I don't think a Harry Potter story can do that. And having a slightly vague and airy plot like Cats is not the same as having a plot that misrepresents characters so strongly as to be seriously insulting (eg Cedric becoming a Death Eater).

I would say that on the one hand, divorce indicates that something has gone badly wrong and someone (or more than one person) has failed to keep their promises, and on the other hand, divorce ought to be recognised so that those involved can make the best of a bad situation, especially since someone might be innocent. Someone is almost certainly culpable and must repent or stand condemned, but it seems wise to leave that between them and their God.

The typical modern legal position of allowing unilateral no-fault divorce, however, goes too far. It gives too much of the power to the unfaithful; yes, there may be cases where an innocent party has cause to leave a marriage but could not prove a case in court, but there are far more cases where such a rule makes it too easy for someone to abandon their obligations and leave a spouse in the lurch.

My own concern about same-sex attraction is that it is inherently segregationist. It puts a firm divide between the sexes, resulting in "separate but equal" male-only and female-only families.

It may well be true that people have such attractions through no choice of their own; my aim isn't to condemn anyone. Merely to point out that the difference between heterosexuality and homosexuality is much more than a difference of eg preferring chocolate or strawberry ice-cream.

Prima facie, it seems like the alternative to theism is nihilism, having no hope for anything and assuming that everything is pointless.

I've come across people who hope for a secular humanist future where immortality and perhaps even resurrection are in reach, so things can actually matter. But when you extrapolate it further, considering the eventual death of the sun and even the heat death of the universe, ultimately such a faith must either still be futile, or else it must include a hope of effectively becoming God - immortal and able to reverse entropy & reshape universes.

And yes, the story needs some work, but even more than grammar errors (I am not a native English speaker, so I am more tolerant towards those, I guess) is eliminating some chapters, which really don't bring much than repeating what the sentence in the books says diluted into whole chapter. On the other hand, there are some chapters which are really stellar ones. I have even write my sub-fanfiction to it.

Yes, “Accidental Animagus” is by far not the biggest offender in the length department, which is I was willing to use it as an example. There are stories which are just bad with this: in “Breakfast in New York” every sub-story is told, reconsidered once more by the main protagonist of the story, and then it is once more explained to somebody else. In “Strangers on a Train” there is a completely bizarre situation where not only whole story it told from the neutral point of view, rethought by Hermione or Harry once more, but then (during the Second Year when Hermione is petrified) Harry retells whole fanfiction to Hermione while she is petrified. Just what did I do to be punished so much!

Your confusing Dark Magic with Black Magic. White Magic involves willing sacrifice like the Sacrificial Protection. Black Magic involves unwilling sacrifice like Horcruxes. Dark Magic is just Magic powered by Negative Emotions like Avada Kedavra powered by Hate. Light Magic is powered by Positive Emotion like Expecto Patronum powered by Pure Happiness. Grey Magic is typically magic that like Wingardium Leviosa just needs neutral emotion but not apathy more like boredom and it typically doesn't need a lot of power like Avada Kedavra and Expecto Patronum. The reason why Magic of ANY type can taint the Soul is because when it comes down to it Magic is just another type of Power. Power can corrupt anyone not disciplined for it. A person can be a Light Lord or Dark Lord but that does not equate Light with Good or Dark with Evil. Good and Evil are mortal concepts that in no way matter to Magic Itself. White and Black Magic to Magic Itself is Pure (White) Magic and Impure (Black) Magic.

“Confusing” implies that there is some official definition of these terms. Which is exactly the problem I was trying to deal in this post. There is no official canonical definition of Dark, Black, White, Light, and even less Grey Magic. All these are just pure fanon, so trying to paint me as confused is completely off base.

Also, you may believe that “Good and Evil are mortal concepts that in no way matter to Magic Itself.” but that is purely in your head and again, there is no canonical basis for this statement.

Carl mentioned Ginny should have been there in the trio to some degree at least, and I agree. But I think it goes further than that. There are beats in a story where the love interest is naturally supposed to be involved, and in Deathly Hallows, she just straight up doesn't exist in those places. It's especially bad at the end. Harry has to go sacrifice himself? Ginny isn't there to comfort him, or to plead with him not to go, none of that. Harry dies? We don't really see Ginny's grief - we do see Hermione's. Harry's alive and victorious? Where in the hell is Ginny? Nowhere, that's where. Harry's celebrating (well, in whatever exhausted way they can) and then going and dealing with the aftermath, with Ron and Hermione.

So how important to Harry can she really be? Harry isn't even thinking about her in more than a passing way throughout the entire Battle of Hogwarts.

I don't think you are completely fair to Mrs Rowling. Yes, in most of the questions you are right, but she was very much present in the scene with self-sacrifice and walk to the Forbidden Forrest, which was arguably the culmination of whole heptalogy. The scene with Ginny caring for an injured girl always tore my heart.

Certainly! There are some really good things that Ginny did in that book, and we see a lot of interaction between her and her family. I don't object to it on the level of character building. (They're good there!) I just mean that there are some "expected love interest" story beats that are missing completely, which could have built/reinforced that romantic relationship that Rowling wanted to exist between Harry and Ginny. Some kind of connection on the level of that scene where Luna talked Harry through casting his patronus when the Dementors attacked - something that demonstrates the depth of a specifically romantic bond between Harry and Ginny in some way.

2021-12-20T01:58:23Z false false Nik false nikpepecarleton
Completely agree. The problem is that JKR is not able to write a romantic scene to get herself out of a wet paper bag. This is the whole romantic scene between Harry and Ginny:

> “We won!” yelled Ron, bounding into sight and
> brandishing the silver Cup at Harry. “We won! Four
> hundred and fifty to a hundred and forty! We won!”
>
> Harry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him;
> she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw
> her arms around him. And without thinking, without
> planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty
> people were watching, Harry kissed her.
>
> After several long moments — or it might have been half
> an hour — or possibly several sunlit days — they broke
> apart. The room had gone very quiet. Then several people
> wolf-whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous
> giggling. Harry looked over the top of Ginny’s head to
> see Dean Thomas holding a shattered glass in his hand,
> and Romilda Vane looking as though she might throw
> something. Hermione was beaming, but Harry’s eyes sought
> Ron. At last he found him, still clutching the Cup and
> wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed
> over the head. For a fraction of a second they looked at
> each other, then Ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that
> Harry understood to mean, Well — if you must.
>
> The creature in his chest roaring in triumph, he grinned
> down at Ginny and gestured wordlessly out of the
> portrait hole. A long walk in the grounds seemed
> indicated, during which — if they had time — they might
> discuss the match.

That's IT. There is absolutely nothing more (and even some
stuff is more about other peoples' jealousy than the
relationship between Harry and Ginny itself). Two small
paragraphs. You know all those lovely scenes between Harry
and Ginny on the shores of the Black Lake, where they
explain each other to themselves? Harry's explaining how
he was lost in his romantic feelings for the past two
years? And of course, Harry's returning to Ginny after the
Battle? Yup, that's all just fanfictions. There is nothing
like that in the books (that chapter 37 is really badly
missing).
